He's hoping for that reaction.

But in all honesty, the way it will work, for at least the near future, will be similar to HOV lanes. The self driving cars will be able to cruise, separate from normal traffic, down their own lane of the highway.

Actually, they'll probably be quicker through traffic than most human drivers. They won't be hindered by human reaction times. Of course, the first versions won't be quite like this, but the more refined versions will.

I think they'll have more of a "comfort cushion" built in for braking, cornering, and accelerating. They'll drive like grandmas just to make sure their occupants don't freak out.
